Another popular spot is Shattuck between Dwight and Adeline. Roadblocks are usually on Fri/Sat nites. Don't drive in Berkeley if you can avoid it! Ridiculously bad traffic engineering plus super-overzealous cops = high likelihood of getting pulled over and ticketed for BS. I've lived out here nine years, been pulled over three times in Berkeley (not counting the roadblocks) and the first two were utter BS - case dismissed. The third time I probably actually did deserve to get pulled over for speeding, and given a warning or maybe a ticket, but I ended up spending the nite in the drunk tank, even though I hadn't had a drop! Another hapless citizen got the same treatment that nite. The DA declined to press charges due to lack of evidence (I blew 0.00 twice and gave them a blood test which was negative too! I have a gimpy ankle so I couldn't walk straight and tried to explain this to the cop) but now I have an arrest record which I'm trying get rid of legally. I've been pulled over ZERO times anywhere else, and I don't even drive very much - I bike to work and the store and all my friends in the neighborhood. The Berkeley PD: it's not just gung-ho patrollers, it's their dept policy to harass people.

More than 43,000 fans are expected to flock to the Del Mar Fairgrounds today for the opening of the horse racing season.

One tradition will be in full flower: Women wearing colorful hats. But police hope to eradicate another tradition: drunk driving by homeward-bound fans who have spent the afternoon and evening consuming large amounts of alcohol. In recent years, there have been numerous accidents caused by drunk drivers on opening day, officials said.

More than 20 police officers from agencies throughout San Diego County will be watching the streets leading from the racetrack parking lot to Interstate 5 to the east and Pacific Coast Highway to the west. Drunk-driving suspects will be booked at the county jail in Vista.

"We have been committed to saving lives by aggressively seeking out and removing impaired drivers from the roadways," said Sheriff Bill Gore.

I saw this roadblock on new years eve a few years ago. The signs said sobriety checkpoint. I drove through after they had ceased operations for the night (I think it was about 1:00 am), so I wasn't stopped. I would expect to see checkpoints here on party holidays in the future. **I don't know the regularity, what percentage of cars were being stopped, or whether they were checking for more than DUI. I checked the middle choices by default. The location is valuable enough to post.**

Lots of cops standing around BSing with each other (your tax dollars at work). All cars stopped and checked for alcohol, drugs, licensing, registration, your destination and where you are coming from. As you approach, cop cars/motorcycles are on the side of the road to go after anyone who attempts to turn around. Location is eastbound, just before the railroad tracks. If you are alert, you can see the lights in time to quickly turn left into the ARCO station, pump a couple gallons, then choose another route by going north on Hwy 99 to Elk Grove Blvd, to cut back to Grant Line after the checkpoint. Due to the number of cars stopped, expect about a 10 minute delay waiting in line before they interrogate you.

I had my license ready and while they checked it, I saw a van being hoisted onto a flatbed truck in the adjoining mall parking lot with police presence, clearly due to a DWI arrest. This is an ideal roadblock location because drivers heading to the 580 freeway from Mission will take this direct route and you can't see the checkpoint up ahead until it's too late. I was greeted pleasantly, not questioned, allowed to proceed, even though I had expected the third degree because I was a biker wearing club colors. I guess they figured if I could keep my bike upright and didn't wreak of alcohol, I was okay. Still, the 20-minute delay due to traffic backup was very annoying and not something our founding fathers would have approved of.

DUI stops are big business in California. This is set up to ruin peoples lives after having a few drinks. They judge you by personal appearance then "point" to your car and order you to get into the other lane.

Me: (Rolls down window 3 inches) Good Evening Officer What's the Reason for the Stop?

Cop: Roll down your window.

Me: Rolls down another 3 inches.

Cop: I said roll down your window all the way! Now!

Me: What is the reason for the stop sir?

Cop: Why are you asking me what the reason for the stop is - you don't the read road signs?

Me: The sign says "Seach and Rescue". What's the reason for the stop?

Cop: Let me see your drivers license (very stern and nasty)

Me: Sure officer, what's the reason for the stop?

Cop: I do not have to tell you the reason for the stop. Let me see your drivers license now!!

Me: (scared) Gives Drivers Licnse.

Cop: The reason for the stop is this is a DUI checkpoint. Have you had anything to drink?

me: NO

Cop: Do you have any drugs in the car?

Me: No

Cop: Get Lost

ME: (drives away)

This sobriety checkpoint is often noticed in newspapers within Napa County (such as Vallejo and Calistoga papers) and not noticed in the Napa Register local paper to decrease awareness of checkpoint without strictly violating any notice requirements attendant on the police.

More than 160 people received $500 traffic citations Wednesday as part of an elaborate sting by the South Pasadena Police Department involving a decoy school bus complete with people walking on and off the vehicle.

The sting - designed to nab motorists who fail to stop for school buses with flashing red lights - has generated debate in the city. Some think the program was unfair, charging that the location was unusual for a school bus, the officers created a distraction, and there were no schoolchildren present.

"It was a crazy place for a school bus to be parked," said Valerie McAndrews, whose 16-year-old daughter was among those cited. "You don't stop in the middle of Huntington or you're going to be rear-ended. In this particular instance I don't think there was any way to obey the law."

Others are supporting the effort, saying the city needs to crack down on drivers who don't follow the rules. The yellow school bus first appeared on the busy six-lane road about 8 a.m. near the intersection of Milan Avenue, which has no stop sign or cross walk.

San Gabriel resident Mary Hatton, 42, said she approached the area about 8:45 a.m. and was confused when she saw more than a dozen officers among the cars in the middle of the busy street.

"It was a circus of lights and chaos," she said of the sting that also involved from Alhambra, Monterey Park, San Gabriel, San Marino and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Temple City station. "No one was speeding, I mean people were literally just trying to figure out what was going on and what to do to to keep away from whatever the activity was. I thought I was being directed along with other motorists away from whatever it was that was happening."

Hatton received the $500 ticket.

The South Pasadena Police Department first decided to set up the sting in the area after receiving a complaint from the parents of a disabled child who boards a school bus on Huntington, Police Chief Dan Watson said.

"They've had a difficult time getting to the bus because people don't comply with the vehicle code," he said. --Corina Knoll in South Pasadena

Where:
The City of Reseda, Reseda Blvd near Sherman Way

Who:
Valley Traffic Division

Why:
The purpose of the sobriety checkpoint is to reduce the number of traffic collisions related to intoxicated drivers and hit and run collisions. During the past year, residents residing on the west section of the San Fernando Valley have endured over 200 collisions involving an "intoxicated driver." In addition, there have been over 1200 "Hit and Run" traffic collisions. The checkpoint will serve as a reminder to use designated drivers and not drink and drive. Our message is simple: if we catch you drunk, you will be arrested.

It is the Los Angeles Police Department's goal to continue providing public awareness on the dangers of drinking and driving, and the law concerning driving without a driver's license. Motorists approaching a checkpoint will observe traffic signs, information and police officers advising that a checkpoint is ahead. Once diverted into a lane, each motorist will be detained a few moments while an officer explains the purpose of the checkpoint.

Funding for this checkpoint comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. We can all help make our streets safer, please report Drunk Drivers - Call 911.

For further information contact Sergeant Robert Kirk, Valley Traffic Division, at 818-644-8000.

Roadblock personel are young and aggressive. This comment was not made by a propogandist for law enforcement which in recent months seemed to have taken to spinning their roadblocks on this registry.

Know this: over a quarter of the states have limited or banned roadblocks by finding additional protections under their state constitutions. Pick up a sign. Go stand where the traffic is backed up. Talk to the inconvenienced drivers. Encourage them to voice their displeasure at being stopped without probable cause. Freedom isn't free. There will always be someone ready to take it from you, always with a good excuse why you don't deserve it.

I've seen this checkpoint on two consecutive new years eves. I didn't drive through it, but saw it from a gas station on the corner of sixth and Harrison. The signs say sobriety checkpoint, but I don't know if they check for more. There are plenty of cops on motorcycles ready to go after those who turn away. **I know you require an answer to regularity of the roadblock and percentage of cars stopped, but I don't know, so I checked infrequently and 25% to 75% by default.** I've only seen it on new years eve. However, I bet they run it on other party holidays. Harrison Street is a four lane, one way street with a lot of traffic. I imagine they stopped every xth car when traffic conditions allowed, but probably stopped nobody during heavy traffic. I think there would have been a huge traffic jam if they had stopped even 25% of the drivers, however none materialized during the five or ten minutes I spent at the gas station. The location and the fact that it happened on two different new years eves should be valuable enough info to avoid, or better yet, to document -- should you have nothing better to do on new years eve! -- this seemingly annual checkpoint.

Every weekend this one is here, and sometimes on weekdays too. They do a lot of racial profiling looking for hispanic people to hassle. I always see them lined up along the side of the road while local police search the trunk. I have seen them pulling guns and drugs out of trunks, so I guess that's what they're looking for. It's really easy to avoid if you drive down a side street.

April 2, 2010 --Last month's sobriety checkpoint by the Santa Monica Police Department at the 300 block of Pico Boulevard led to two arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol. More than 1,000 people drove through the checkpoint area on the night of March 17, and 242 were stopped in the random screening process. Five people were cited for driving without a license. Another eight were cited for other violations. Twenty-nine people were found to have "somewhat of an objective symptom," causing police officers to require a field sobriety test. But all but the two who were arrested were allowed to go on their way following the tests. There were 342 arrests for DUI in Santa Monica last year. The SMPD did not have available statistics from previous years to make a comparison. Last year saw a decrease in DUI-related collisions, with 36 taking place in 2009 and 48 taking place in 2008. Trisler did not immediately have information on how many of those collisions involved fatalities. Statewide, DUI incidents are down significantly. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, there were 1,029 DUI-related fatalities in 2008 (the most recent year from which statistics are available). That is a 9.1 percent decrease from 2007 and a 20.1 percent decrease from 2005. By Jonathan Friedman Lookout Staff

November 17, 2009 -- You should never drink and drive, but if you plan to travel in the vicinity of Lincoln Boulevard and Michigan Avenue Friday evening, be especially sure the person behind the wheel is sober. The Santa Monica Police Department will be conducting a Sobriety/ Drivers license check point to confirm their sobriety and drivers license status, police announced Tuesday. It will be the first of several checkpoints to be conducted over the next twelve-month period, police said. "Law enforcement officers are doing more to remove drunk drivers from California's streets and highways thanks to our DUI traffic safety funding," said Christopher J. Murphy, director of the California Office of Traffic Safety. "But everyone can help make their communities safer," Murphy said. "If you see a Drunk Driver - Call 9-1-1." Since 2005, the number of alcohol involved fatalities has been dropping, thanks to efforts like those in Santa Monia, authorities said. They encourage law enforcement and the public to continue to work toward "zero deaths." Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In an effort to enforce curb accidents at crosswalks, the Police Department conducted stings at a dozen Santa Monica intersections Thursday, nabbing 120 motorists who failed to yield to pedestrians.

The stings - which consisted of plainclothes officers crossing at a crosswalk, while motorcycle officers waited in the wings - took place during a four-hour stretch that included the busy lunch hour.

The officers only cited motorists who drove through a crosswalk when a pedestrian was already crossing the street, and not simply waiting at the curb for the vehicle to stop.

The stings took place at crosswalks where there have been collisions or about which the department has received complaints.

"It's a large campaign so people will see it," said Jay Trisler, the Police Department spokesman.

The 12 intersections were:

41 people cited in one hour for using cellphones while driving in Torrance, police say February 4, 2010 | 10:04 am People in Torrance who talk on their cellphones while driving may want to rethink that idea after police there ticketed 41 drivers for allegedly talking on their cellphones over the span of an hour. Officers from the Torrance Police Department's traffic and special events division set up an operation on Hawthorne Boulevard at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday to stop drivers for talking or texting on their cellphones. The one-hour operation netted 41 violators, police said. The operation was prompted, in part, by police officers' observations while on the road, said Sgt. Jeremiah Hart. "We're seeing this a lot. Let's go out and do some education on this," Hart said Thursday. "We're trying to reduce distractions." One driver also was arrested for driving without a license, he said. The total fine for a first cellphone violation is $142, including court fees and penalty assessments. -- Raja Abdulrahim LA TIMES

I was traveling southeast on Alvarado Niles and saw a police roadblock for vehicles traveling the other direction. This was on a Sunday afternoon in the vicinity of Decoto Rd. Locals later informed me that this thoroughfare was a common DWI checkpoint location on weekends. If our government truly cared about preventing alcohol-related accidents, shouldn't all vehicles have alcohol-sensing ignition systems (that could be overridden in absolute life/death emergency)?

This is a "cruising control" checkpoint under the pretense of easing traffic congestion (when in fact the opposite was the result). LASD works both directions. Vehicles are videotaped as they are stopped by deputies. The vehicle's license is recorded and entered into a database. The driver and all passengers receive a warning the first time through not to pass through the control area again (or face a $100 fine each for cruising). Deputies also inquire about your destination or reason for traveling through the strip. They have also stopped vehicles and cited them for loud sound systems. Heavily fortified with police.
