Tuesday 9 a.m. I made a legal right turn onto a city street about 1/4 mile before roadblock, but within view of it. Two "chase cars" left the check point and blocked the city street onto which I had turned. I was told to exit my vehicle and place my hands on the hood of my car. I was arrested for "fleeing a checking station." Later, I was cited for driving without a license (expired). Animal Services was called to collect my dog which was in my car. My car was towed. I was in custody three hours. Note: my registration, license plates, insurance and safety inspection are current and valid. I am not a fugitive nor a convicted felon. I was simply on my way to work.

"SOUTHEND" - heading towards downtown from SOUTH BLVD.

One lane exit ramp. This is a HOT SPOT for booze it or loose it campaigns and random checkpoints. Roadblocks often held during drinking holidays (Cinco de Mayo, St. Pattys day, etc..). Two checkpoints the past three years on Cinco De Mayo.

They've done some construction on this part over the past year due to the NASCAR hall of fame, but I've read on Charlotte.com of at least two checkpoints within the past year here. High % of local pubs/bars in this area. Tryon street downtown is also a place to avoid.

Always on Fridays one way in and one way out of town. checking for illegals. rounding them up an 'Fridays when they know they get paid. They are rounded up bussed to the Magistrate, fined $170 and released to drive again! The average number is 28 - 35 x $170. Is this legal, moral or fair? This is bullshit to me. These people are working there asses off and sending the money for the most part to their wives and kids in Mexico. Wow! Seems like highway robbery to me. I call it the pirate police. $5100. Not bad for a couple of hours work for a staff or about five people and the magistrate.

They check only licenses, not checking for sobriety. They are specifically targeting undocumented immigrants. That is Holly Springs police's MO. They pull over any and all Latinos they see. So if you are not of Latino descent don't worry they will be super polite. It is racial profiling. Last time I checked I did not live in a police state where I had to give my papers in to prove I am here legally, on a regular basis.

LE was fishing: asked me where I was coming from, what I did for a living (I was driving an older model muscle car that obviously had a lot of money spent on restoration.) I felt offended, even though I answered both questions, but then I asked why they asked, where they looking for someone? I really came away with an interoggated feeling. I didn't like it at all. I didn't feel like they had my best interests at heart, and that is why I sought info on roadblocks and found your website. Next time I will decline answering any questions. Thanks much for the info!!

I have not personally encountered this roadblock, but a resident in the neighborbood has and told me about it. She told me the roadblock is always in two different places, very close to the aforementioned intersection. The roadblocks are usually at night, but sometimes in the day. The sheriff and state police will simply ask for license and registration. The resident who informed me of the roadblock suggests that the police are targeting a sub-neighborhood of residents who mostly live in double-wide houses. These residents are less formally educated and she suspects they are less familiar with their rights. The police also suspect that these residents are more likely to have violations.

They ask for licence, check your inspection & tags, and like to ask where you are going, what have you been doing, etc.

This site is repeated sometimes twice in a day. I have gone through this site in the morning by county sherriffs and 4 hrs later the same site by state troopers. I think it is unwarranted for this area of very little traffic and crime. it is a quiet country setting and believe the police do not need to be here as often as they are.

Additional information about this roadblock or notes on roadblock encounter:

My neighbor first told me about this roadblock. A police car sits at the end of the exit. When a motorist approaches while coming off the exit, the officer gets out of his car and motions for the car to pull over. He then engages the driver. The police car is not flashing his blue siren, which is something required by North Carolina law.

I started keeping an eye on this area, looking for the return of the police car. I did see it one day, but the officer did not exit his car to stop motorists. I would like to videotape these encounters, especially if the officer does not display the blue siren required by North Carolina law.

By the way, this checkpoint is easy to avoid. Simply slow down while starting to make your exit. If you see a police car at the end of the exit, you will still have time to stay on 421 and continue to the next exit. I find this to be the case with many checkpoints at the end of exit ramps.
