Just happened upon this roadblock
on 9/13/03 at midnight. They asked for my driver's license, then
walked around to the back of my car. The officer looked at my
license plate and then walked back around and gave me my license
back. I noticed they didn't give the car ahead of me much trouble
either. I'm not sure what they were looking for, but there were
several state troopers present and they all had orange vests on,
like they planned on being there for a while. |

9-9:30 PM - Often Sunday night coming from church - we are in the center of the Bible Belt with most people only coming from church. 8 - 9 squad cars, several pulled over cars in parking lot. Right by RR tracks. This time Sunday night before Labor Day. They do this regularly - I have seen them 5 or 6 times, probably about once every 3 months. I am sure many times when I haven't been there. |

Four police cars parked along the southern end
of Ocean Boulevard, and as soon as the first group of motorcycles
with the Myrtle Beach Helmet Freedom Ride passed them, officers
turned on their lights, sounded their sirens and stopped the group,
causing a makeshift roadblock just before the Springmaid Pier.
Myrtle Beach police officers handed out their
first helmet tickets to motorcycle riders who violated the city's
new law Saturday.
Capt. David Knipes, public information officer
for the Myrtle Beach Police Department, said he would not have
a total amount of helmet-violation citations or details of any
related arrests until Monday.
Ralph Bell Jr. (left) and Rebel Tyler each get
a $100 ticket on Kings Highway in the Helmet Freedom Ride on Saturday,
Feb. 28, 2009. About 200 bikers rode from Murrells Inlet's Beaver
Bar, north on Ocean Boulevard and south on Kings Highway from
29th Avenue North to protest the city's ordinance requiring motorcyclists
to wear helmets. Bell is a member of the Columbia ABATE chapter.
Tyler lives in Myrtle Beach. As soon as the tickets were tucked
away in their wallets, the men put on their helmets for the ride
back to Murrells Inlet. Photo by Janet Blackmon Morgan / jblackmon@thesunnews.com

ONLINE See more photos and a video of bikers and
their ride in the rain at TheSunNews.com. "I don't have a number,"
he said mid-afternoon, "but we did write them."
For some of the riders, the citations meant mission
accomplished.
"The only way we can challenge it is for someone
to get a ticket," said Fred "Fast Fred" Ruddock of North Charleston,
who rode up to Murrells Inlet.
Organizers said about 200 riders and passengers
turned out, although they rode to Myrtle Beach in smaller groups.
Riders said they weren't protesting helmets, but
were opposed to the city of Myrtle Beach's new law, which went
into effect Saturday and requires anyone on a motorcycle or scooter
to wear a protective helmet The riders left The Beaver Bar in
Murrells Inlet about noon, headed north on Kings Highway, turned
on Ocean Boulevard and had planned to ride up to 29th Avenue North
before riding up to the U.S. 17 Bypass and going back to The Beaver
Bar.
A group of onlookers gathered in a vacant lot
just north of the start of Ocean Boulevard to watch the group
ride into town, and that's where the police cars waited, too.

Nichols is well known as a speed
trap but from time to time, usually on weekends, the county, state,
and town police run a traffic check. When they suspect something
is questionable, they have been known to completely strip-search
a vehicle, to the point of removing the seats. |
